چکیده

Scuba has permitted in situ research of the early life histories of subtidal marine invertebrates, limited only by the small size of early stages. Investigators have used scuba to observe, among other things, coral spawning, including the spectacular mass spawns on the Great Barrier Reef, which established that most corals are hermaphroditic broadcast spawners. Observations and experiments have been conducted to measure fertilization rates of freespawning species, such as octocorals, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, and sea stars. Experiments have measured relative male reproductive success and the gamete traits that influence it in sea urchins. Finally, in tunicates, which produce larvae large enough to be seen by the naked eye and shortlived enough to be followed on a single dive, scuba has allowed direct observation from release to settlement, thus helping to shed some light on this process, which otherwise can only be studied indirectly.

The Biogeography of Marine Invertebrate Life Histories

Biologists have long sought to identify and explain patterns in the diverse array of marine life histories. The most famous speculation about such patterns is Gunnar Thorson’s suggestion that species producing planktonic larvae are rarer at higher latitudes (Thorson’s rule). Although some elements of Thorson’s rule have proven incorrect, other elements remain untested. With a wealth of new life-...

Marine Chemical Ecology: A Science Born of Scuba

For more than 50 years, organic chemists have been interested in the novel chemical structures and biological activities of marine natural products, which are organic compounds that can be used for chemical defense and chemical communication by diverse marine organisms. Chemical ecology, the study of the natural ecological functions of these compounds, is an interdisciplinary field involving ch...

Alterations in antioxidant defence in the early life stages of silver carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix

Fish larvae experience major cellular and biochemical changes during their early life stages. The aim of the present study was to evaluate alterations in the antioxidant status and values oflipid peroxidation and vitamin C content during the different life developmental stages ofHypophthalmichthys molitrix. Eggs and larvae were sampled at fertilization, organogenesis, eyed egg, hatch, active feed...

The use of demographic sensitivity analysis in marine species conservation planning

We explore the idea that a sensitivity analysis conducted on stage-specific demographic rates can be used to improve our ability to determine the efficacy of conservation plans that are designed to enhance the recovery of individual marine species. Because a given reserve may not be able to protect all life stages and habitats for wide-ranging marine organisms, reserves should target life histo...

SYMPOSIUM Variety is the Spice of Life Histories: Comparison of Intraspecific Variability in Marine Invertebrates

Synopsis Life-history characteristics of marine invertebrates exhibit broad diversity across taxa as well as considerable variation within species. Although such variation is widely recognized, comparisons of the magnitude of variability as an outcome of evolutionary processes are relatively rare. Theory predicts, for example, that patterns of variability within and between clutches can arise a...
